goodnight smiles

"okay, i'm ready" she said, placing her hands on the frame of the car window, steadying herself from the lightheaded spell of laughter. "i'm done laughing"
"what?" he asked, mystified that she was approaching a goodnight kiss as if it were a serious game of chess.
"i took my mind off of laughing...i swear" she replied. It was apparent from her forcefully controled face and rigid grip on the car window that she was struggling not to giggle. But at the same time, she loved laughing with him.
"how?" he asked. he tilted his head just so and looked at her. He smiled. not because she was trying so hard not to laugh, but just because she was there...with him, saying goodnight to HIM.
"i thought of" she began laughing hysterically all over again. "i thought of...." her voice trailed off into unreserved laughter, almost melodious. She couldn't finish her sentences, they kept losing themselves in her laughter. " i thought of... babies...." her laughter was all consuming by this point, every part of her body sensed it. she moved with each new wave of laughter. From afar she looked like she was dancing.
"you thought of babies?!" he laughed. She knew his laugh, she liked his laugh. He reached for her hand that was holding onto the edge of his car window.
“babies...." she could barely speak. "babies being hit..." she trailed off into laughter again, arching her back away from the car, her face to the night sky, her hair cascading down her back like a shooting star. He watched as her stomach moved while she laughed and tried to catch her breath. she couldn't control herself all over again.
"You thought of babies being hit?!" he had caught her contagious laughter and could barely finish his sentences too. She looked at him. his eyes were closed because he was laughing so hard. She noticed how dark his eyelashes were. She kept laughing because he was laughing. he kept laughing because she was laughing.
" i thought of..." she said, still laughing. "Babies being hit by..." she was crying with laughter by this point. "babies being hit by...by...by baseball bats" They both fell into another round of laughter. She leaned against the car window, supporting herself as she laughed. He wrapped his hand around the side of her face for a brief second, he felt the movement of her laughter. They looked at each other. They understood. They laughed, without words, for what seemed like forever. Finally their laughter died down. He made to kiss her, his hand pulling her face towards his. She could feel her suppressed laughter coming back. So could he. They were smiling too intensely that they couldn't kiss just yet. Their lips were touching, but it wasn't kisses. It was smiles. They were smiling...together...their smiles touching almost like a kiss. She liked it this way. She rested her fingertips on the spot where the clasp of his familiar necklace graced the back of his neck. He brought his other hand to the side of her neck, holding her there, close to him, close to his smile, close to his almost kiss. She was aware of the breeze in the trees, the sweeping sound lulled her. She liked that they hadn't said anything for a while. She liked that
Their breathing slowed, their eyes were still closed. He tilted his head and kissed her, or did she kiss him?
They kissed each other. once. twice. a million times goodnight. She turned towards the door.. He knew the shape of her body because he watched her when she walked. she turned as she reached the door. Still no words. She could still feel their laughter, his smile, his kiss, and the capricious loss of all senses from all three.
She liked it this way.
